Google Gemini is coming to Chromebook Plus laptops.

Several AI functions are available for the first time on Acer's latest Chromebooks.

Chromebook Plus laptops are getting Google Gemini

Google revealed on Tuesday that it will be bringing Gemini and AI capabilities from its other devices to Chromebook Plus laptops, which will include new models from Acer and others that are already available from Asus and HP. New capabilities like Google's "Help me write" tool and the ability to create personalized wallpaper using generative AI will be supported by these and future Chromebook Plus computers. The Magic Editor feature found in Google Photos will soon be available on Chromebook Plus. It has also begun to show up on older Android smartphones.

It is not surprising to find Gemini integrated into Chromebook Plus, which is typically a more powerful (and more costly) Chromebook, as the firm had previously stated it would combine Gemini with the Chrome desktop browser. For quicker and more convenient access, Google added the Gemini symbol to the app shelf. Additionally, it is providing a complimentary 12-month subscription to Google One AI Premium, which grants users access to Gemini Advanced, 2TB of cloud storage, and Gemini integration with Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Gmail, to anyone purchasing a new Plus laptop.

Additionally, Google is releasing new features that are compatible with both the standard Chromebook and the Chromebook Plus. These features include the ability to create GIFs from screen recordings, a built-in view of Google Tasks, and a QR code setup process that allows your Android phone to share your Wi-Fi and login credentials with your new Chromebook.

The new gaming and 2-in-1 Chromebook Plus laptops from Acer

Today, Acer also unveiled two new Chromebook Plus models, the Chromebook Plus 516GE, a gaming Chromebook, and the updated Chromebook Plus Spin 714, all of which will come with Gemini and other AI technologies.

A 2-in-1 laptop, the Spin 714 can be customized with up to 16GB of RAM and 512GB of storage, along with one of two Intel Core Ultra 7 or Core Ultra 5 processors. A 14-inch, 1200p touch screen with optional stylus compatibility, a 1440p camera, and a 10-hour battery life are features shared by all models.

The gaming Chromebook Plus 516 GE from Acer boasts a 16-inch, 1600p, 120Hz IPS display, an RGB keyboard, preloaded GeForce Now, a 1080p webcam, Wi-Fi 6E, and a 2.5G ethernet connector. It also supports the same Google AI and Gemini capabilities as the Spin 714.

An Intel Core 7 150U or Core 5 120U processor, up to 16GB of RAM, 2TB of storage, and ten hours of battery life are included in the configurations. Notably, the Core 7 150U and Core 5 120U lack NPUs, which means they will not be as quick with on-device AI tasks as more equipped devices, even though this laptop will operate with Google AI and Gemini capabilities.

Beginning in May, the Acer Chromebook Plus Spin 714 will retail for $749.99 and €979.00 in North America and EMEA, respectively. In North America, the Acer Chromebook Plus 516 GE will go on sale in May for a starting price of $699.99.

Gemini on Chromebooks from Asus and HP

Along with the Asus CX34 and ExpertBook CX54 Chromebook Plus, HP's 14 and x360 Chromebook Plus refreshes will also come with the same Gemini and other Google AI capabilities and features.

The Intel Core 13-N305 processor (which lacks an NPU as well) in HP's Chromebook Plus 14 is accompanied by an Intel Wi-Fi 6E or MediaTek Wi-Fi 6 adapter, 8GB of RAM, up to 256GB of storage, a 14-inch 1080p IPS display with 300 nits of brightness (the non-touch option has 250 nits), a 1080p webcam, and a battery life of up to 11 hours. The only differences between the specs of the HP Chromebook Plus x360 14, or 2-in-1 variant of the clamshell above, are a touch display with a brightness of 250 nits and a battery life of up to 10 hours.

Up to an Intel Core Ultra 5 125U processor, 8GB of RAM, 128GB of PCIe Gen 3 or 4 storage, and a non-touch 1600p display with a maximum brightness of 500 nits are features of Asus' ExpertBook CX54 Chromebook Plus. Up to an Intel Core i3-1215U (which likewise lacks an NPU), up to 16GB of RAM, 256GB of storage, and a 14-inch, 1080p touch-optional display are features of the Chromebook Plus CX34.

You can buy any one of these four Chromebook Plus laptops.

Throughout the remainder of the year, Google has promised to add more functionality to ChromeOS for Chromebook Plus devices. That includes Gemini's "Help me read," which is intended to summarize PDFs and respond to follow-up queries, and the company's AI face and gesture tracking system, "Project Gameface," which was made available to Android developers earlier in May. Additionally, Chromebook Plus devices will come with a new Focus feature that includes the ability to share open windows and programs across all of your devices, independent of operating system, as well as a Do Not Disturb mode.
